Six-year-old Grant Gustafson of Spokane shows off one of his catches Saturday at Gilchrist Pond on Union Flat.
Grant, who looks forward to starting first grade next fall, was coached by his grandfather, Ken Gustafson, who has been bringing grandsons to the Kid Fishing Day event on Union Flat for the past 12 years.
Junior anglers and their parents who braved the cold weather reported good fishing Saturday morning.
An estimated 100 youngsters turned out for the event.
Those who did make it to the pond generally found the fish cooperative and good-sized.
Each youngster received a new Zebco fishing pole and reel, and Sheriff Brett Myers and crew provided fish cleaning services for the young anglers.
Host Gerald Gilchrist reported 400 fish were planted in the pond.
Gilchrist Pond is open to fishing for all ages with licenses required.
