A little more than a month after LaCrosse’s only cafe closed, a new operator is in the process of signing a lease to reopen it.
Barb Curtiss will be the new operator of the cafe and will sign a lease with LaCrosse Community Pride, the organization which owns the building. Curtiss said she hopes to be open by the first of September and will call the new business Route 26.
Pride board member Lois Startin said Curtiss was one of the cooks in the former Grillbilly Cafe.
“We’re so excited to have it open again,” Startin said. “She’s awesome and very personable.”
After a total renovation of the Teapot Cafe, the Grillbilly Cafe opened in May 2013.
That cafe closed in May after a year of operation. Owners Joe and Dionne Evans said they couldn’t handle the workload any longer and wanted to concentrate on working on their ranch near Hay.
Curtiss said she will offer burgers, sandwiches, salads, a small breakfast menu, a kids’ menu and have Friday and Saturday night dinners. She said she will cater to what the community wants.
“I’m excited,” Curtiss said. “I like being with people.”
