School gun nets 30 days

The 15-year-old Colfax boy who was arrested May 30 at Colfax High School after he brought a BB pistol to school was sentenced to 30 days in confinement July 17 in juvenile court. He pleaded guilty to a charge of bringing a firearm to school.

The youth was ordered to serve the first 10 days in custody and then be released to undergo a mental evaluation. Pending outcome of the evaluation he could be required to serve the remaining 20 days of the sentence. He was also placed on one year of supervision.

The youth was disarmed by Principal Buck Marsh after students who saw the gun informed school officials early that morning. The arrest report by Officer Perry Tate said the pistol, a .17 caliber BB gun powered by CO2 cartridges, was dysfunctional. According to the arrest report, the youth told other students he planned to use the gun on someone at school, but he wouldn’t identify his intended victim.

He had been allowed pre-hearing release after his arrest after a $5,000 bond was posted by his parents. Several conditions, including no contact with the school, were imposed during the release.
