Serving Whitman County since 1877
Members of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ and The Thrift Shop gathered bagged and labeled a load of “almost new” items, listed by Red Cross volunteers, to help small towns of Twisp, Winthrop and Carlton who are in the process of cleaning up and rebuilding from the fires.
A lot of work clothes, boots, work gloves, masks, electrical cords, duct tape, battery operated lights and barbecue equipmentwre among items bagged. While The Thrift Shop had some of these items, the “most wanted” goods included things that are not typically donated.
A call went out to several local hardware stores and within one day, 2600 pounds of pet and livestock feed were donated, along with boxes of new batteries, headlamps, flashlights, cords, work gloves and many other items.
Dennis Hatley volunteered to go to the stores to load the donations from Pullman Building Supply, Four Star Supply and Ace Hardware in Pullman.
Another Thrift Shop volunteer, Donna Robinson, brought in a huge amount of new or almost new clothing, a wheelchair and walker, plus a lot of children’s wear.
Hatley departed last Saturday at the crack of dawn to arrive in Twisp by noon.
Thirft Shop volunteers Alice Kramer, Marcia Church, Pat Caraher and Nancy Mack worked last week to make this mission of mercy succeed.
Hatley reported that the goods were most welcomed, but the Red Cross centers in the Methow Valley are now overstocked and are asking to curtail further donations.
The veterinarian in Twisp, a WSU graduate, was most grateful to receive the animal feed. He definitely appreciated the generosity from Pullman, according to Nancy Mack, chiar of the Thrift Shop board.
