Recently there was a two page story in the Spokesman Review regarding the winning record of Sue Doering and her magnificent volleyball success. Glad to see that it centered upon how through the years Sue and her many helpful assistants, usually her former players, had also helped. Sue has worked hard and, indeed, built from the ground up. By being in control from the beginning it makes a world of difference and she rightly credited the great support that she has received from the parents who have entrusted their daughters to her. She takes that responsibility very seriously and it shows.

When people drive through Colfax they do not see “flash and dash” but if they slow down a little, spend a little time in our businesses and dining establishments they begin to see that what does not show on Main Street can be found by digging a little deeper. There the story begins. The stories of community helping in time of need for example when my little neighbor fellow was diagnosed with cancer immediately the wheels were set in motion to help that young family out. Indeed helped a lot. Over 25 thousand dollars was raised.

Lately too, some folks have been meeting weekly at Events on Main. This is a wonderful place to conduct business, share stories and find out who needs help and what can be done. Many stories like this occur on a regular basis. The “not so flashy” Main Street is being scraped up and beneath we find the heart and soul of our little community.

Sue, and the many stories that “happen” are part of the very fabric of this small town with a big heart. That makes us all “winners”. That is a wonderful thing, indeed.

My wife and I enjoy traveling in our little car all over the western United States. More than once during discussions with some of the locals we mention that we are from Colfax, Washington, and yes folks say they have heard of us for one good reason or another. That brightens our days a lot.
