The state Make It With Wool competition was Oct. 25 in Leavenworth in conjunction with the annual convention of the Washington State Sheep Producers Association.
The contest and fashion show involved 18 contestants who modeled garments they had sewn with fabric that was at least 60 percent wool.
The Junior winner is 15-year-old Miranda Dowler of Vancouver. She sewed fitted black wool pants and a jacket from Native American jacquard-weave fabric. She will proceed to the national level of competition in Reno in January. Alternate Junior winner is 16-year-old Mia Suhrbier of Winlock. She machine embroidered a red wool dress with black lattice trim at the back and sewed a fitted black coat with a flared skirt. Mia received a Viking sewing machine.
The Senior winner is 19-year-old Emily Hausner of Eatonville. She tailored a fitted plum wool suit to win a trip to the national level. Also receiving a sewing machine was Senior alternate, 18-year-old Heidi Christenson of Ridgefield. She sewed a pink and black houndstooth coat with black cuffs. Representing Colfax in the Senior division was Sarah Appel who tailored a pale gray coat and wore it with a pastel green gabardine wool dress that she embellished with machine embroidery.
The Adult winner and recipient of a serger was Sally Fitch of Yakima. She sewed a fully lined Pavilian coat from wool fabric she wove. Sally’s picture, video and garment will proceed to National Make It With Wool to be judged. One adult national winner will go to Reno. Alternate adult winner was Dorothy Fish of Federal Way. She felted wool jersey and strip quilted the bodice to make a jumpsuit. She received a cash award.
