Vikings clinch third, Pomeroy fourth for playoffs

The playoff picture is nearly set for Southeast 1B league football.

Garfield-Palouse clinched third place with a 46-30 win over Sunnyside Christian Nov. 1 and will play their first-round game against the loser of Odessa-Harrington vs. Republic, who face each other Friday night.

Pomeroy has the fourth-place spot from the Southeast league, and will play the winner of Odessa-Harrington and Republic.

At the top of the Southeast 1B league, Liberty Christian meets Touchet this week for the teams’ final regular season game, which will decide first and second place.

Gar-Pal will finish their regular season schedule tonight against Colton at home.

The Thursday game allows coaches to scout their playoff opponent Friday.

Garfield-Palouse 46, Sunnyside Christian 30

The Vikings traveled to Sunnyside Christian for a Saturday game and secured the third-place spot in the Southeast 1B league.

Garfield-Palouse led 22-18 at halftime before opening up the rushing attack with ballcarrier Cole Sanderson in the third quarter.

"It was a lot closer game than I would’ve wanted," said coach Will Woltering.

Hunter Woltering threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns while Sanderson ran for 114 yards on 27 carries. Tyler Thurman caught seven passes for 259 yards.

"I couldn’t tell you who led us in tackling because a lot of times nobody was doing any tackling," said Coach Woltering.

The game was played on Saturday to allow time for players returning from the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.

St. John-Endicott 58, LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus 8

If he were coaching a bunch of fifth and sixth-graders it might have been different, but in this case St. John-Endicott coach Steve Selk’s team suited up to play football Oct. 31 with nary a mention that it was Halloween night.

While a few costumed young kids meandered on the sidelines, the Eagles’ Wilson Lundberg and Jimmy Hollingshead each scored four touchdowns as S.J.E. outran the Tigercats on a quiet Halloween in Washtucna.

In the second quarter, a few car horns honked and an ambulance let out a siren whoop when L-W-K’s Chance Rice scored on a 25-yard run.

The halftime score was 42-8.

After the first possession of the third quarter, Selk sent in his reserves.

Lundberg had carried the ball 13 times for 179 yards while Hollingshead had four carries for 95 yards. One of his touchdowns came on an interception.

Junior Lucas Elkins led the defense with two sacks in the game.

The loss dropped LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus to 0-9 on the season with one game remaining – at Dayton Thursday night.

The Eagles (3-6 overall, 2-4 league) will now play their last game of the year, Thursday night in St. John against Sunnyside Christian.

With identical records, whoever wins will take fifth-place in the Southeast 1B league.

A victory for the Eagles would also mean they reach four wins for the season, which was one of the team’s goals; to total more than last year’s three.

Pomeroy 54, Colton 0

The Wildcats traveled to Pomeroy Oct. 31 and were shut out.

The team dropped to 3-5 overall, 2-5 league.
