The stage in Livingston's Opera House, more commonly known as city hall, has been greatly improved by an addition of six feet to its depth. This improvement will meet the hearty commendations of theatrical companies playing here, as well as of theatre-goers. It has been long needed.

While other parts of the county are contented to tell about better-times-to-be, Winona can say truthfully that better times are here. For two years financial conditions in western Whitman County have been on the mend and at the present time it is in better circumstances than most other parts of the nation.

Dave Powell has purchased from C.H. VanScholck the west 77 feet of lot 1, block 39, West Cooper Street, for a consideration of $1,000, and is building on the property a wooden five-room bungalow with full basement for his own use.

Leather will fly thick and fast when several Colfax High School's boxing stars mix with students from Pullman High School in a smoker sponsored by the Pullman school Friday night. George McDowell is the Colfax coach and W.B. Henry arranged the match.

At a total cost of approximately $550, the work of dredging the North Palouse river channel as a flood control project was brought to virtual completion last week by Harold Mast.

Wheat production in Whitman County, biggest wheat producer in the United States, probably hit 17 million bushels this year, manager Tony Smick of the Colfax ASC office reported.

More than $2,500 was raised by the latest and most successful of all hospital fund benefits when 1,600 persons were served at a dinner in the Colfax High School cafeteria.

Seventeen tons of barley, contributed principally by farmers in the Dusty area and some others, was shipped recently to the "Mountain of Blessing" orphanage in Pusan, Korea, where crop failures and unreasonably high prices make it impossible to obtain sufficient food. The orphanage of 300 plus infants and children is managed by three missionary couples, all from the West Coast, plus two nurses and several native helpers.

Members of Eaton Grange have voted to continue on inactive status for another year. The decision at the annual meeting means the Eaton members will continue membership as a grange, but members will not meet during the year. Lloyd Dechenne, master, said this will be the second year Eaton Grange will be on inactive status.

Five Whitman County representatives will compete in Washington's 1990 Young Woman of the Year program at Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum on the Washington State University campus. The first program under the new name is sponsored by Washington's Junior Miss.

In photos, LaCrosse/Washtucna students and fans Saturday celebrate at the Tacoma Dome as their Tigercats rolled to a 60-12 win over Columbia at Hunters to win an unprecedented third straight title in the WIAA eight-man division. The Tigercats came from behind in the first quarter and dominated the Lions to end the game with a 45-point lead before the close of the third quarter.

A staple of the Palouse for more than 100 years, the Rebekahs, a local women's social organization, and an arm of the International Order of Odd Fellows, has officially disbanded and returned their charter to the state organization, according to Ruth Lowe, one of the last remaining members.
