Colfax boys moved their season record to 2-0 with a 63-32 win over a young Colton Wildcat team Tuesday night in the Bulldog gym.
Led again by Kasey Johnson, who finished with 13, the Bulldogs ripped to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter.
Colfax started the game with Johnson scoring on two drives to the bucket. Keith Gfeller followed with another drive for a 6-0 Bulldog lead. Johnson then backed off and hit a three pointer for a 9-2 Colfax lead.
Coach Reece Jenkin called out the bench for much of the game and younger players on the club had a chance at some action. Despite putting the reserves on the floor, the Bulldogs stacked a strong edge for shooting more than 50 percent from the floor.
Under new head Coach Jason Shull, the Wildcats toughened up their defense in the second half.
The clean Colton defense put one oddity into the game’s bottom line: Colfax had just two foul shots for the game. They hit both shots to mark an easy 100 percent for the night.
Grant Kinzer, a sophomore, led the Wildcats offense with 16 points on the night.
The Wildcats have just eight players on their roster for the season with Austin Meyer and Lane Moore as the lone seniors.
Colton graduated five seniors off the team which took the 1B title last year in the Spokane Arena.
Saturday night in the home opener against Deer Park, the Bulldogs ripped to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter against the Stags who were making a rare visit to the Colfax court. Deer Park, which arrived with one win in the books for the season, kept close in the second quarter but never managed to close the early Colfax lead.
Senior Kasey Johnson led Colfax with 24 points and Danny Robinson, who returns to the varsity as a sophomore, hit 22. Robinson hit a game-high three 3-pointers in the opener and had an 11-12 night at line.
Colfax Friday will start the long NE campaign when they host the St. George’s Dragons. The game will be the first on home-and-home rounds in the south half of the NE. Colfax will also play single games among the six teams in the north half of the league.
Saturday, Colfax teams will play another non-leaguer at Lakeside and then play Tuesday at Liberty against a Lancer team which is picked to be one of the powers in the NE run next year.
