It has been a bloody week.
In Pakistan, 132 school kids were killed by Taliban murderers, shouting God is Great.
In Sydney, Australia, a coffee shop was taken over by a crazed man resulting in a hostage situation and standoff with police. Three including the gunman were killed.
Then, in America, a father killed six members of his ex-wife’s family before he killed himself.
The hatchet attacks in New York, the vehicular assault and attack on Parliament in Canada and the furor over police shootings in this country all paint a gruesome picture of the current spiral towards violence in the world.
We continue to live with frequent beheadings, drone attacks and on-going warfare. A plague ravages parts of Africa, and some countries are becoming bellicose and increasingly belligerent.
Some have lamented the state of the world and say that it is depressing them because it is so hopeless. They despair.
Yet, there have been times in history that were more dire and more difficult.
And, we are still here. We and those before have striven for a better world, and at times we have been successful in achieving it.
This is one of those times when hope should be strengthened rather than forsaken.
We can do better. We can solve some of the threats to peace and security around the world. We can work to eliminate diseases and hunger.
Even though there are those who hamper such efforts, there are many, many more who aid them.
This is the season of hope. Hope and resolve can change the world.
This is the season to start.
