Amara Huber of the Bulldogs crashes between Mallory Kessler and Madi Harder (front) of Lind/Ritzville/Sprague on the way to a bucket Friday at Colfax. Huber at the end of the game hit the deciding bucket for the Bulldogs.
A quick trip down the court with a slash move at the top of the key set up a last seconds shot by Colfax senior Amara Huber Friday night to zap the Ritzville Broncos in a showdown of the NE-South leaders. The 49-47 win by Colfax, followed by a crunch over Tekoa/Rosalia Saturday at Rosalia, left the Bulldogs 4-0 in the league run.
The win also set up a NE collision Jan. 3 when the 8-0 Northwest Christian team comes to Colfax for a showdown. The NWC game will be the first of six games against the NE north side teams for Colfax in the next league rounds.
The NE segment will start after Colfax plays Saturday and Monday in the holiday tournament at West Valley.
Ritzville arrived here Friday with a 5-0 record, and both teams went into the league round with 3-0 marks.
The first half was battle all the way with Taylor Garcia hitting the last bucket for a 23-21 lead by Colfax at the break.
Colfax posted a 36-30 lead at the third quarter and advanced it to 46-39 with 3:28 left on a bucket by Scout Cai.
The Broncos came back by collecting points at the toss line off the 24 fouls posted by the Bulldogs. Mallory Kessler hit a pair, and Tommi Swannack who finished 7-8 at the toss line hit two. That run of points was followed by a three-point shot by Peyton Curtis who topped the Bronco scorers.
The LRS run ended with Swannack hitting her last two toss shots to tie it up at 47-47 with 11.1 seconds left.
Huber then took the ball down the court and hit the lefty shot to dash chances for an overtime.
Saturday night at Rosalia against the Timberwolves, the Bulldogs held the hosts to just three points in the first quarter and led 40-7 at the half. Kori Goodwin and Carmen Gfeller each hit 10 to lead the Bulldogs and Olivia Pakootas hit 10 for the T-wolves. Final score was 52-23.
