Colfax, N.W. Christian girls collide for league title tonight

Colfax and Northwest Christian, winners of their respective sides of the NE league, will collide tonight in the championship game of the NE district tournament at Reardan’s Main gym at 6:15. Both teams rolled through the first two rounds of the district play Wednesday and Saturday at the big district event.

Colfax girls advanced their NE record with wins over Wilbur/Creston and St. George’s in the first two rounds.

The Crusaders advanced with wins over Liberty and Davenport in the first two rounds.

Lone NE loss for the Crusaders was their 37-56 loss to the Bulldogs in the lone matchup between the two leaders at Colfax Jan. 3. The Crusaders arrived here with a 10-0 string for that early showdown session between the league leaders.

Colfax girls Saturday defeated St. George’s 63-43 in the semi-final round of the district show at Reardan to advance to tonight’s championship game. The Bulldogs held the Dragons to nine points in the second quarter to post a 35-20 lead at the half.

Sidney Sheer topped Colfax scorers with 13 points, and Amara Huber hit 12.

Coach Corey Baerlocher went to a straight platoon system late in the game when the Dragons were unable to knock off much of the Colfax lead.

St. George’s Ceci Berquist, who has tangled with the Colfax defense in the prior two league rounds, hit a game-high 18 beans in the semi-final round Saturday.

Sophomore Hailey Hagashi hit two three-point shots at the Dragons attempted to make up ground in the second half.

St. George’s was called for 23 fouls in the scramble, and Colfax gunned 22-31 at the toss line.

The Dragons advanced to the semi round with Colfax after a 50-48 win over Reardan in the first round.

Colfax last Wednesday hammered Wilbur/Creston, the number-four qualifier out of the north side, 63-17 in the opening round at Reardan. Colfax hit an even 50 percent, 26 of 52, from the field against the Wildcats and had 10 players make the scorebook. The Bulldogs laced six three-point shots in the opener with Ashtyn Aune hitting three. Colfax junior Scout Cai missed last Wednesday’s tourney launch due to illness.

Northwest Christian, advanced to tonight’s the title game with a 78-42 win over Davenport in the other girls’ semi Saturday at Reardan. Bozlee led the Crusaders with 14 against the Gorillas.
