An Oakesdale woman’s idea to put a one-day-per week barber shop in the town’s old gas station was deemed incompatible by the city council.
Appearing at the council meeting Feb. 2, Nannette Bolyard asked representatives about the possibility of renting the old brick gas station space across from Crossett’s Market for Fridays. Because the town-owned building has no sewer and water service, which is required by law, the council told her it would not be possible.
“It would’ve been a cute little one-chair barber shop,” Bolyard said. “It was just an idea I was tossing around and wanted to see if it was feasible.”
A 13-year Oakesdale resident, Bolyard, an employee of the Whitman County Sheriff’s office, indicated she may pursue the idea elsewhere.
“Eventually, I’d like to have a one day per week barber shop,” she said,
Interested in the space as a potential low-cost way to do a one day per week operation, Bolyard works four 10 hour days as a records and information officer for the sheriff.
A licensed cosmetologist, she previously worked at Nita Marie’s Hair Salon in Oakesdale, as well as at Fantastic Sam’s in Pullman and Supercuts.
Bolyard said she’ll revisit her Oakesdale barber shop idea after completing the sale of a house.
“Once I get that out of my hair then I’ll look into maybe finding a spot,” she said.
