Remodeling continues on library’s Center

Work is moving along on The Center, the space next to the Colfax Library.

On Tuesday workers removed the old windows and installed temporary front walls, according to Kristie Kirkpatrick, Whitman County Library Director.

The Center, which is located at the long-time site of the former Hamilton Drug Store on Main Street, is planned to be open year round and will feature exercise and yoga classes along with art exhibits.

Kirkpatrick has said The Center will help expand community meeting space as well as art and gallery events, local small business incubation, sales of local products, and regional tourism events. The Colfax Chamber of Commerce may also be housed there.

Before the windows are replaced, the condition of the interior of the building will be checked out for remodeling and the potential costs involved. The temporary front walls will be used to seal the rooms while the window spaces are open.

Kirkpatrick said the windows will be ordered when they have a better idea of the overall project cost.

She explained the old windows were not energy efficient and one had a hole in it.

Along with the windows and walls, Kirkpatrick said the roof line will be replaced and an awning may be included if there are enough funds available.

Estimated project cost is about $40,000, and work is being funded by the Whitman Library Foundation and grants.
