Reynolds wins

Easter basket

Bob Reynolds was the winner of this year’s Easter basket contest sponsored by the Colfax and Community Fund Drive. Close to $600 was raised this year through the event. The money goes to support agencies that help local families and individuals in the fund drive.

Penny drive slated

Whitman County Library’s annual penny drive will be April 12- 30 in observance of National Library Week April 12-18. Each of the 14 library branches will collect money to fund programs or projects at their location. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. Many school classrooms and local daycares gather coins and compete for an ice cream party. The celebration, hosted by the Friends of Whitman County Library, features games and the ever popular Reading Bear.

St., John egg hunt

The annual St. John Easter Egg Hunt will be Saturday, April 4, 10 a.m. at St. John Park.

Colfax recognizes

academic achievers

Colfax School District recognized academic achievers Monday night at an annual Academic Awards Ceremony for 7-12th grade students. Superintendent Michael Morgan and Principal Buck Marsh recognized students who have maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or earned a 3.75 or better GPA last semester. Approximately 130 people were in attendance as the district recognized 75 students.

This year’s senior class had 38 percent of its members receive certificates. 32 percent of the seniors received a plaque for having earned a 3.7 GPA or above for each of the last four years.

On average, 25 percent of students earned certificates for academic excellence.

Hallett will show

internet music links

Scott Hallett, who was able to go from a ukulele beginner to instructor using the internet, will visit eight libraries around the county during the second week in April and teach how to develop musical skills by using internet sources.

The workshops are supported by a Technology Made Easy grant funding provided to the Washington State Library by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bank Left plans

7th tasting, show

For its seventh annual chocolate tasting with lunch and art exhibit, Bank Left at Palouse will feature “Italian Love”–the art of Laurel Macdonald influenced by her travels in Florence, and the Bistro will feature Spanish drinking chocolates, French Truffles and a French lunch April 11 from noon to 2 p.m. Reservations required at $18.

Art exhibit is free to the public and runs from April 11 to May 9. Macdonald will debut her “Love Prints” at The Bank Left Gallery.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Kamiakin Cubs

The Chief Kamiakin Pinewood Derby was Saturday at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman. More than 40 Cub Scouts from Whitman and Latah counties participated in the regional event. Top two winners from individual pack competitions qualified for the regional contest.

Winners were Brenden Thill of Troy, Idaho, Pack 311, first; Issac Harmon of Moscow LDS Pack 321, second; and Hiram Abbott, also of Troy Pack 311, third.

Athenaeum

The yearbook committee is making plans for the end of the club year. The next meeting will be April 3 at Marilyn Harder’s country home.

April 17 is the Guest Day and the club will meet at the Lutheran Church. Sue Hallett is in charge of the program and promises that a live parrot will make an appearance. Please advise the committee of invited guests.

The final meeting will be May 1, noon, and will be a luncheon at Events on Main.

P.E.O.

Chapter AF met March 23 at Peace Lutheran Church with Joann Wood as hostess. Seventeen members responded to roll call by indicating their favorite team in the March Madness play-offs.

The Education Committee reported that the scholarship forms have been provided to the high school councilor.

New Yearbooks titled “Open a Box and Learn New Things” were passed out to members for 2015 - 2016 year.

Ann Marra presented the program “Pay it Forward” and passed out cards to each member to use when a good deed is done.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 13 at Linda Marler’s. Linda will hostess and present the program.
