The Colton softball team pulled off two narrow escapes this week with extra inning victories over Orofino and Asotin.
Playing at home vs. Orofino Monday for a doubleheader, the Wildcats lead 7-0 in the fifth inning before the visitors came back to tie the game at seven.
Into the extra eighth inning, Orofino scored to go up 8-7 before Colton came to the plate again. With Daylynn Smith as the runner placed on second for the extra-inning tiebreaker rule, Zoe Moser was up first and ground out. Kendyl Druffel then hit a hard ground ball to left field for a single and tie the game at 8-8. Mary Ann Jacobs followed with another hard grounder to left before Winnie Schultheis hit a double to right field to bring in Druffel for the game-ending run.
On the mound, Moser pitched all eight innings to allow eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Jacobs lead Colton at the plate with three hits while Smith, Schultheis, Druffel and Moser all had two. Rachel Meyer added one hit and three RBIs.
In the second game, a 14-0 Colton win, Schultheis pitched all five innings to allow one hit with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
At the plate, Moser and Druffel both had three hits while Schultheis had two hits and three RBIs. Jacobs added two hits and two RBIs and Georgia Meyer delivered two hits as well.
Smith and Meyer both had one hit for two RBIs each.
Playing at Asotin Tuesday night, Colton found themselves in another tie-game at the end of seven innings. Going into the eighth – this time by Washington rules which don’t feature the given runner on second base – Colton’s Jacobs ground out before Schultheis got on base with an error and Savannah Chadwick walked.
Emily Schultheis hit an RBI single to end the game, 5-4 for the Wildcats.
“Asotin played solid defense tonight,” said Colton coach Brad Nilson.
On the mound for the Wildcats, Moser threw four innings for eight strikeouts and a walk, while Schultheis threw four for six strikeouts and two walks.
At the plate, Colton recorded just five hits – singles from Jacobs, Emma Schultheis, W. Schultheis, Georgia Meyer and Rachel Meyer.
“We just couldn’t hit the ball,” said Nilson.
Colton (7-1) will play next at home Monday against Liberty Christian, in a doubleheader moved from Saturday.
Nilson now leads his team after Spring Break into the thick of the season.
They practiced three times over the break.
“That was obviously not enough,” he said Tuesday night. “We got a lot to work on tomorrow.”
