Seats still open

The candidate filing period as well as the extended candidate filing period have both officially come to a close, with 67 seats still left open.

As of press time on May 20, eight candidates had filed during the extended period for the seats which failed to attract a candidate during the regular filing period that ended May 15. Four more candidates filed before the close of the extended period May 20.

Terry Huber filed for the Colfax School District director one position, currently held by Laura Johnson, who did not file for re-election. In the Oakesdale School District, Carl V. Crider filed to retain his director position.

A race emerged in hospital district three at Colfax. Colfax resident Sandra Brabb filed for position five at large, with incumbent Martin Marler filing to retain his seat shortly after.

In Farmington, Lamont and Malden, all city council positions lacked filings, as well as the mayoral seat currently held by Steve Ulrich in Lamont. A Garfield council position also had no candidate.

In the school districts, one position in Lamont and another in Garfield did not attract candidates, with three positions in Colton also going unfiled for.

Sixteen fire districts’ positions also had no takers, as did three cemetery positions each in Endicott, Colfax, Winona and Farmington and one cemetery position in St. John.

Finally, 22 park and recreation positions did not have a candidate file, including four each in LaCrosse, St. John and Oakesdale, two in Rosalia, three in Tekoa and five in Endicott.

In the case of positions unfiled for, the incumbent retains the position.

Also, positions that attracted more than two candidates will be on the Aug. 4 primary ballot to narrow the ballot down to two names for November.

These include the ninth district state representative position and the Colfax and Palouse mayoral positions.
