Tekoa-Rosalia drops to 1B football

Tekoa/Rosalia has opted to drop out of the 2B division for football next fall. They have opted to play in the 1B division which will mean they will not be eligible for playoff competition.

Rosalia Principal Darrell Kuhn said an anticipated low number of players next fall led to the decision to play in the 1B division. He said they will play an independent schedule during the football season.

The Timberwolves plan to play all other sports in the 2B division next year as a member of the NE league in WIAA District 7.

Tekoa/Rosalia's exit from the NE league drops the league football count to nine teams and leaves an open date in the league schedule. Colfax has already booked LaConner into the open date with the two schools slated to meet on middle ground and play at Kittitas Sept. 11. That will be the second game of the Colfax season.

Last year, schools in NE league league played all league schedules with 10 schools in the league. The NE league has 11 schools, but St. George's does not field a league team.

Colfax Coach Mike Morgan said he expects some of the NE schools will have to scramble to plug in a non-league game, particularly those who had TR slated late in the season because most area teams lock into their league schedules in the last weeks of the season.

Tekoa/Rosalia ranks as the fifth smallest in the state 2B division for the WIAA 2014-2016 roster with 101 students in the first three grades.

The 2B division includes 59 schools with enrollments between 90 and 224. Warden is the largest school in the division with 224.

Schools with enrollments smaller than TR include Wilbur/Creston at 96, Liberty, 94, Waterville, 92, and Tacoma Baptist, 90. Colfax enrollment for the three grades was charted at 165.

DeSales, listed with 81, is among four schools who have opted to play up in the 2B division.
