Serving Whitman County since 1877
Those looking to satisfy a sweet tooth and learn a little something about their food can do just that on July 27.
Joseph’s Grainery has partnered with Spokane Community College’s ACT 2 program and the Whitman County Library in Colfax to bring Farm to Table to Colfax.
The one-day event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Whitman County Library and have cookies and cakes baked with whole grain and legume flours baked fresh by those in attendance that morning.
Following the morning snack, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from.
“Weather permitting, attendees will watch the Joseph’s Grainery International Harvester hillside combine gracefully make it’s way through the amber waves of grain, harvesting as it goes,” a press release for the event read.
Joseph’s Grainery owner Bill Myers of Colfax will show the farm operation and those attending will get to learn exactly how the grain make its way from the farm to their tables.
Kelli Collins, Joseph’s Grainery food blogger, said events like these help to make people more aware.
“It really helps them to understand exactly where their food comes from. It helps them see and correlate those are the wheat fields I drive by every day,” she said.
Collins also said it helps people to realize they can eat locally, too.
“You really can eat locally and it’s with what we grow in the region,” she said. “It’s fun to help people understand that eating locally isn’t just some grand idea. It’s doable.”
Those interested in the event can register at http://www.josephsgrainery.com with a $13 registration fee. Registration can also be completed by calling 509-279-6030.
