The Pullman Posse’s bid for a trip to state Junior Legion playoff fell one game short Sunday when the locals were stopped 4-7 by Trail, B.C., in the game for the last state ticket out of the district tournament at A.K. Jackson Field in Spokane.
Posse finished the Spokane playoff run at 2-2.
Against Trail Sunday, Posse posted a 4-1 lead with a three-run charge in the top of the fourth inning.
Trail came up with the right hits in the right places to swing the score to their side. They scored two in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead with a four-run charge in the bottom of the fifth.
Down three runs, Posse’s last chance for the state show surfaced in the last inning when they loaded up the bases, but failed to collect.
Trail finished with eight hits; Posse finished with five hits and three errors.
Evan Parks had two hits with an RBI double, and Chris Parrish had three hits with an RBI triple.
Posse advanced to the last chance game after defeating Ferris 8-7 in the Saturday elimination round at the Gonzaga Prep field. They scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to peg the one-run lead and kept Ferris from answering in the top of the seventh.
Parks hit a grand slam to tie the game, and Cole Sanderson rapped the go-ahead RBI single after Josh Grote went to first in an error and Tim McLeer advanced him with a single.
Pitcher Wyatt Griner kept his composure through five Posse errors to claim the win. He allowed Ferris nine hits.
Parks, Grote, and Jake Cillay each had two raps against Ferris.
Posse faced off with Ferris after being hammered by Gonzaga Prep 11-1 in the second round. Gonzaga rapped 15 hits in a game which closed down after five frames on the 10-run rule. Posse left 10 runners on the bases.
In the playoff opener Thursday, the locals shut out Colville 11-0 to advance to the second round.
Cillay threw a one-hitter in the opener, and the Posse batters laced 15 hits to shut the game down in five innings.
Brody Yarnell and Grote each had three hits for Posse. Yarnell, Cillay, Sanderson and Grote each tagged a double in the Posse barrage.
Posse led 5-0 after the first two frames and then added four more in the third. Two more runs in the top of the fifth put the lead over the 10-run margin.
Each team had one error.
Cal Gregory, Sanderson and Cillay each had two hits. Other hitters were Parks, Griner and Spencer Walker.
Asotin County bagged one of the tickets to the state show with a 14-4 win over Mead in the Sunday action. The Asotin club hammered 16 hits.
They took the district’s number-three ticket Monday in the last district round with a 9-8 win over the Trail team which bumped Posse in the Sunday round.
Trail landed with the number-four ticket.
Asotin advanced on an 8-4 win over Ferris in the Friday round and then sustained a one-run loss to the same G Prep team that hammered Posse.
Posse finished the season with a 15-5 record.
Mt. Spokane won the top slot for the state finals which will be at Olympia, and Gonzaga Prep took the number-two slot.
