Serving Whitman County since 1877
Public hearings are set for Aug. 31 on the proposed vacation of two county roads, the D. Meyer Road west of Chambers and the Cottonwood/Kerns Road south of Sunset. The hearings dates were approved by Whitman County Commissioners at their regular meeting Monday.
The commissioners asked Public Works Director Mark Storey to write a report on the road segments in question and make a formal recommendation to present at the hearings.
D Meyer Road, which was laid out in 1899, at one time linked the Pullman-Wawawai Road on Union Flat east to the Dunning Road which is located west of Chambers. The 1.6-mile stretch that would be vacated is now a dead end road.
Storey said the road actually no longer exists, but the right-of-way remains and the object of the vacation is to clear the right-of-way.
“That one is pretty easy,” Storey said.
Cottonwood Road is a spur road off the Sunset Road, about a mile east of Sunset. The road segment includes the Kerns Bridge which crosses Cottonwood Creek.
Sections of the road have been vacated, but the last piece with the bridge is still useable.
Storey pointed out to the commissioners Monday that the bridge at some point in the future would need to be repaired. The road now serves one farm property.
Vacation of a road means the county is not longer responsible for its upkeep.
Times for the Aug. 31 hearings have not yet been announced.
