Pulitzer winner

to visit library

Anthony Doerr of Boise, winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for fiction with his novel "All the Light We Cannot See," will be the featured speaker for this year's Everybody Reads program Nov. 12-13. He will be at the Colfax Library Friday, Nov. 13, for a noon luncheon. Reservations will be required for the luncheon and can be made by calling the library. He is also scheduled an Neill Library that day at 5 p.m.

Doerr's book also won the 2015 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in fiction.

Autumn fest

set at Dahmen

for 9th year

"An Old Fashioned Sunday in Autumn” will be Dahmen Barn’s ninth annual fall event Sunday, Sept. 20, between 10 am to 4 p.m., to experience an old fashioned Sunday in autumn.

In keeping with the theme, visitors may watch demonstrations of time-honored crafts. Antique farm equipment will be on display and a plowing bee will be on adjacent farm ground.

Junette Dahmen will talk about the uses of antique implements from her private collection. There will be activities for kids, and the Snake River Six perform live music from 1 to 3 p.m.

A pie baking contest will be judged by two professional chefs. There is no entry fee, and first and second prizes will be given for apple and apple combination pies. Bakers may enter in both categories.

Pies must be delivered before 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, or between 8 and 10 a.m. the next morning. Pre-registrations by phone or email are appreciated. Pies will be sold as a fund-raiser.

A vehicle-related swap meet and classic car show are sub events. Classic cars and trucks are invited to park at no charge in a designated area for two hours or the entire event. A vehicle swap meet event is also available for people who wish to sell vehicle-related items, vehicles themselves, tractors, cycles or related parts. Automobile-related art, paintings of cars or art made from auto parts are also allowed.

For the swap meet, the cost for a space big enough to park a vehicle and a table is available for $20.

Demonstrations of time-honored crafts such as wood carving, fishing rod making, chair caning, broom making, scale model gas engines, turning of pegs for wooden musical instruments, fiber arts including knitting, spinning yarn and functional items made of barrel staves.

Dance classes

set for Colfax

Presented by Rising Stars Dance Studio, dance classes for children will begin at the Colfax branch of Whitman County Library each Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 4. The classes are geared to children 3 years and older and introduce them to a variety of genres including ballet, tap, tumble and jazz.
