Wanda Alderman, recently of Steptoe, has received an Outstanding Volunteer Award from The Washington State Genealogical Society in recognition of her efforts to preserve important historic images and records. Alderman received her award from members of the Whitman County Genealogical Society who submitted her nomination.
Alderman has been instrumental in preserving the heritage of Whitman County for Whitman County Library’s Rural Heritage Collection. Working with the library for more than six years, Alderman has located photos, interviewed contributors and documented catalog information.
Whitman County’s Rural Heritage collection contains nearly 4,000 photos and averages 4,500 site visits per month, the most in the state.
Alderman serves as secretary/treasurer for Bethel Cemetery and donates time to the St. John Historical Society. One of her other volunteer assignments is keeping timing charts for the boat races at Webb’s Slough in St. John.
