Olivia Mellor goes up for a Bulldog serve against Mt. Spokane
Colfax volleyball players roared to a five-game win over Mt. Spokane on the home court Thursday and added league wins at Kettle Falls Saturday and on the home court against neighboring Tekoa/Rosalia Tuesday. The run of three wins gives the Bulldogs a 3-1 record in full match bouts.
Friday, Coach Sue Doering and crew will depart for Okanogan for a tournament. The Bulldogs are slated to play Toutle Lake Saturday in a 9 a.m. opener. Other teams in the Colfax bracket are Pateros, Cashmere and Chelan.
The tourney will conclude with the finishers in each bracket facing off with their opposite in the other bracket.
Thursday night Colfax and Mt. Spokane locked up 2-2 on the Bulldogs' court and then went into a decider game which went to extra points before Colfax nailed the win at 19-17.
“It was a real barnburner,” Coach Doering commented.
Line score for the Colfax match win was 24-26, 25-23, 25-20,18-25 and the 19-17 decider.
In the last game, Morgan Lord served Colfax out to an 8-0 lead, and it looked like the Bulldogs were going to bank it.
“Then we proceeded to let them back in it,” Doering commented. She noted the scorebook showed six Colfax mistakes while the Wildcats came back to knot it at 14-14. They actually put the Bullogs on the edge at 15-16 and 16-17, but Colfax scored the last three points. One came on a missed serve by Mt. Spokane ace Miahna Waters. Olivia Mellor and Carmen Gfeller put down the last two kills for Colfax.
After Mt. Spokane carved out the 26-24 win in the first game, they ripped to a 13-6 lead in the second game before the Bulldogs came back to tie it at 17-17. It went to 23-23 before Colfax took the last two points.
In the third game, Colfax took the lead for the last time at 21-19 on a hit by Scout Cai. The Wildcats scored just one more point.
That put Colfax up 2-1, but they blew a tire in the fourth game with the `cats staking an early 10-2 lead on the way to an 25-18 win and the 2-2 tie before the decider game.
Saturday after the long trip north to Kettle, the Bulldogs put down at 25-10, 25-12, 25-12 win over the K-dogs in the first NE league round. Katelyn Scholz booked a 17-18 day at the serve line with seven aces and Lord hit nine for 10.
