Colton beats S.C., now 3-1

Playing at home last Friday, Colton picked up a key league win over Sunnyside Christian to go to 3-1.

The Wildcats extended for a 56-44 victory after an interception distilled the Knights’ comeback momentum in the third quarter.

Colton led 32-14 at halftime before Sunnyside Christian cut the lead to 40-36.

Later, the Wildcats added a touchdown on a drive started by an interception from Cameron Bean. He also scored on a pass from Carter Dahmen.

Later in the third quarter, Sunnyside Christian scored again and recovered an onside kick. On the next play, Grant Kinzer, a junior safety, picked off a Sunnyside Christian pass to take the ball back.

“He put the fire out,” said Colton coach Clark Vining. “Kinzer kind of crushed their momentum.”

Dahmen threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns in the game on 23 of 34 attempts. He rushed for 125 yards on 18 carries.

Bean scored three touchdowns on the afternoon, with 97 all-purpose yards.

Brady Chadwick caught 10 passes for 155 yards and Kinzer had nine receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown.

He also led the defense with 10 tackles while Pete Shultheis, Luke Moore and Tom Wolf delivered on the defensive line.

“The defensive line played pretty well,” said Vining.

The win sets up Colton at 3-1 (1-0 league) going into another home league matchup this week against St. John-Endicott. The game will mark a re-match from a contest last year hard to forget.

The Eagles won on the game’s last play, a tight-rope sideline kickoff return from Jimmy Hollingshead. At the end of that game, the class of 2015 St. John-Endicott graduate slowed down, fraying wide across the field as the clock faded and Colton players chased in vain.

“That was a wild game last year,” said Vining.

For 2015, the Eagles are 0-4 so far after losing to Pomeroy last week, 58-6.
