Palouse police complaint investigation placed on hold

Resolution of a complaint against the Palouse Police Department and Mayor Michael Echanove remains on hold because the town’s Police, Fire & Safety committee chairman has been away on vacation.

Rick Wekenman presented an initial report to the Palouse city council Sept. 22.

He and his committee had not yet met with Phil Gaber and other parties involved in what has been described as a neighbors’ dispute.

The Gabers contend that police response has been inappropriate, and that Echanove failed to address their concerns when they first brought the matter to his attention. The full details of the complaint are not known at this time.

Wekenman reported to the council that the Gabers’ formal complaint noted they had contacted Echanove four months ago; however, the committee determined date of the contact was July 7.

The Gabers appeared at the Palouse city council meeting Sept. 8 to submit the formal complaint.

Wekenman is expected to report on the matter Oct. 13 at the next city council meeting.

“Let the process work,” said Echanove. “Let Rick and his committee look at it when he gets back from vacation.”
