Bulldogs to host Kettle Falls for homecoming

After two weeks on the road, Colfax gridders will return to their home grid to host Kettle Falls Friday in the homecoming game.

The Kettle club will arrive after getting their first win of the season, a 16-14 trim over Oroville with a charge in the last quarter. Kettle picked up the Oroville game for their non-league week in the campaign.

Kettle has posted a 0-4 record in the league with a 6-47 loss to Liberty in their last NE round two weeks ago.

Coach Mike Morgan said scout films show Kettle can be expected to run a variety of offensive sets during the course of a game. Kettle again rolls out a big line and this year they seem to be going more to inside power with two tight ends and use of the wishbone attack.

Kettle uses the 4-3 set on defense.

Colfax will host after rolling up a 43-6 win over Mary Walker at Springdale Friday night. The Bulldogs and Crusaders battled through a tight first quarter, but Colfax unloaded with 25 points in the second.

Quarterback Keith Gfeller booked a 17-25 night passing for 187 yards and four touchdowns.

Morgan said one of the key features for the big wins was the variety of targets Gfeller hit during the night. He linked passes with seven different receivers, and the four TD shots went to four different people.

Colfax also had a solid night from sophomores who were filling in gaps in the Colfax injury list.

Dane Hall rolled 105 yards in seven carries to lead the youth corps; Ben Ahmann finished with 65 yards in 121 carries.

Colfax and Springdale battled for most of the first quarter until Gfeller linked up on a short pass to Ahmann for the first score with 2:21 left in the frame.

Colfax started their 25-point outbreak in the second quarter with Gfeller hitting Adam Tate for a 34-yard TD with 9:19 left in the frame. Gfeller followed with a two-point pass to Reggie Jones.

Springdale answered on their next possession with an eight-yard TD run by Payden Cates to put the score at 14-6.

After that Colfax hit three straight times. Gfeller found Tobie Warwick on a 10-yard TD shot with 4:58 left in the half. Two minutes later Ahmann shook loose for a 27-yard TD run.

Gonzalo San Roman, an exchange student from Spain who had already bagged two extra point kicks, had a 29-yard field goal attempt with two seconds left in the half.

The kick closed out the first two periods at 37-6.

Colfax added one TD in each of the last two quarters, with Ahmann running 12 yards for a score in the third quarter and Gfeller hitting Warwick for a 22-yard zap in the last quarter.

Kenton Lyman led the Colfax defense with six solo tackles. Caleb Brown had five solos.

Coach Morgan said seniors Tyler Kincaid, Nick McAdams and Cody Fulfs can all be expected to return to the lineup and key a part of the action Friday night for the home crowd.

Fulfs, the top running back for the club, was knocked out of action early in the NWC game two weeks ago. In other NE league action last week, Lind/Ritzville/Sprague remained on top of the heap after a 32-29 escape over Northwest Christian on a field goal. Liberty nipped Davenport 14-13 and Reardan defeated Wilbur- Creston 41-22.
