Vikings blow out Dayton, 72-38

Garfield-Palouse freshman Ely Hawkins tackles Dayton’s Tristan Willis in the second quarter Oct. 3 at Palouse. The Vikings play their homecoming game Friday.

His voice cut into the night sky.

“Ely, make a tackle!” yelled Garfield-Palouse coach Will Woltering last Friday night across the home field in the first half against Dayton.

Seconds later, No. 40 was called to the sidelines.

Sent back into the game, freshman Ely Hawkins and the Vikings scored on their next drive.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dayton's Tabin McHaffie fielded the ball, cutting right. He angled upfield in front of the Vikings' crowd and something appeared out of the night: No. 40.

Whhhhoooooump! Hawkins leveled McHaffie, sending him backward onto his shoulder pads on the Palouse grass.

The crowd erupted.

How's that, Coach?

Garfield-Palouse won 72-38. Sophomore quarterback Evan Weaggraff went 8 for 14 passing for 186 yards and Wyatt Griner rushed for 90 yards and four touchdowns.

Cameron Springstead caught four passes for 100 yards and a touchdown as Garfied-Palouse built their record to 2-2, 1-1 in league. Springstead also rushed for 50 yards.

“Speed has been killing us,” said Woltering. “We're just working on getting our fastest guys the most touches.”

The Vikings led 42-12 at halftime as Dayton stayed in contention for much of it, scoring on long touchdowns.

“Just the big plays – that hurt us,” said Woltering. “Other than that, we handled them pretty well.”

Garfield-Palouse plays next at home Friday night for homecoming vs. St. John-Endicott (0-4, 0-2).
