Dickens classic
in new form
Pullman Civic Theatre will present a different take on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol " when they present "A Steampunk Christmas Carol" Dec. 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" as a ghost story, not a Christmas story. PCT has embraced the darker side of the story and by doing it in a Steampunk fashion to give it a grittier edge while still being family friendly.

Library closure
All 14 branches of Whitman County Library are closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, for Thanksgiving. Due dates for library materials have been extended in anticipation of the closure and no late fines will be charged for these days. Drop boxes will remain open at all locations for returned items.
Don Quixote
set for WSU
Washington State University Performing Arts Black Box Classics will present “The Wonderful Adventures of Don Quixote" for six performances - 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, 5, 10 and 11 with Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 12 - in WSU’s Wadleigh Theatre in Daggy Hall under the direction of Benjamin Gonzales and Bryce Park.
General admission costs $10 adults, $8 seniors (ages 60+) and $5 non-WSU students and youth. Free admission for WSU students with valid ID is made possible by support from the WSU CougParents Program.
Yule open house
set at Dahmen
A holiday open house will be at the Dahmen Barn Dec. 11 through 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Uniontown. The gift shop is expanded for the holiday season with many locally made specialty food items not available any other times of the year. A door prize will be given each day.
On Dec. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m., kids can visit a Santa’s workshop and meet Santa. Colton Child Care is providing reindeer snacks and a holiday themed make-and-take craft while kids wait to see Santa.
Barn calendars
now on sale
Next year's Barns of Whitman County calendar is now on sale and features historic black and white barn photos from Whitman County's past. Calendars are available for $6 at any branch of Whitman County Library, Colfax Rosauers, and Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds will benefit Friends of the Library programs for all library branches.
The calendars were designed and donated by Steve Van Vleet from WSU's Whitman County Extension department with photos coming from Whitman County Library's Rural Heritage collection and WSU's Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections.
Parenting class
set at Jennings
Families Together will host free positive parenting classes for families with children with challenging behaviors Dec. 1 and Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jennings Elementary School.
Families with children with challenging behaviors are encouraged to participate in the two-part program. Understanding behaviors and prevention will be covered in the first session, and teaching new behaviors using the positive behavior support model will be covered in the second session .
Childcare and light snacks will be provided.
Families Together’s programs are designed to build and sustain strong, healthy, informed, and actively involved family members who can work together to improve the lifelong outcomes for their child or sibling with a disability.
CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS
Athenaeum
Members met at St. Patrick Parish Hall Friday, Nov. 6, with Dorla Scholz serving as hostess. Members enjoyed “Once Upon a Mattress” numbers performed by members of the Colfax High School class under the direction of Cary Cammack. The musical will be staged at Colfax High School Nov. 19-23.
Dana Carroll presented a program on the Great Depression and its effects on the lives of women. Dana highlighted the contrast between city dwellers versus farm dwellers who could grow much of their own food, and the plight of those in the Dust Bowl. The hostess served a variety of delicious treats from a festive fall tea table.

Chapter AF met Nov. 9 at the home of Diane Solbrack. Karen Groom hosted and Nancy Waldron was co-hostess.
Twenty members and one guest responded to roll call by indicating what they were most thankful for.
Tammy Lewis was welcomed as a new member. Marjean Gissel from Clarkston reported on her attendance as a delegate to International Convention held in Indianapolis, Ind.
The next meeting will be a social event. The Christmas Party will be held Dec. 13, 2:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.
Whitman Hospital Auxiliary
Members met Nov. 2 at the hospital annex. Plans for the Dec. 7 Christmas luncheon at the Colfax Methodist Church were finalized. Make reservation for the noon luncheon now.
The auxiliary will have a Christmas Open House Dec. 1, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bluebird Boutique located in the hospital.
Tickets for the quilt raffle can be purchased in the gift shop in the hospital.
