Colton girls took both varsity basketball rounds Monday night at the Colfax Jamboree. The Wildcats' varsity defeated Lakeside 16-10 in their first 10-minute segment and then topped Colfax 21-17 in a close battle to end the night's competition. Lakeside pulled within two points, 10-12, in the final minutes of their varsity round, but the Wildcats dropped five straight foul shots to take the win.
Colfax and Colton waged a closer battle with the Bulldogs, taking a 7-6 lead on a hook shot by Taylor Garcia. Colton ace Zoe Moser hit a three-pointer and followed it with two toss shots to regain the lead for the Wildcats.
The last Colfax lead was posted at 17-16, and Colton again charged back with MaryAnn Jacobs hitting a three-pointer from the side and Jordyn Moehre dropping the final two toss shots. Colton entered last night's jamboree with just eight players on their varsity squad.
Colfax coach Corey Baerlocher rotated squads of varsity players so all could get a chance of seeing action in the hoop season's opening event.
Colton jayvees roared to a 27-11 win over Colfax jayvees in their 10-minute round before the varsity crash.
Colfax varsity nipped Lakeside 13-12 in that varsity round.
The Bulldogs and Colton will hook up again Friday night when the Bulldogs travel south to play in Colton's new gym for the season opener.
The new gym is part of a schoolwide remodeling.
