Bulldog wrestlers place second at Davenport meet

Seven Colfax wrestlers booked a second place finish Saturday at the Davenport tournament. The Bulldogs rolled up 97 points to finish behind the 143-point win compiled by Kittitas.

Coach Dennis Gransbery noted the 97-point finish for second place marked a strong team performance for the Bulldogs with just seven entrants in the Davenport tournament.

Mitch Barney won the 152 class with a run of three pins which ended with a win over Chase Gleason of Kittitas with a pin at 2:24 in the championship match.

Colfax Senior Brian DeYoung placed second in the 182 class. He booked two pins and was stopped by Josey Anderson of Kittitas 0-11 in the championship round.

Senior Reggie Jones took two decisions to get into the title round where he was edged 4-10 by Carlos Cruz of Pateros.

Dane Hall was also in the 145 bracket and booked a 1-2 in the consolation bracket after he sustained a 2-4 loss to Ben Webster of Kittitas in the opener.

Chris Jones, who was edged in his first match, booked two wins in the consolation round and took a 3-1 decision over Duwayne McGruder of Kittitas to place third in the 138 pound class.

Jonas Canup was stopped after two matches in the 132 class, and Garrett Phillips took two wins in the consolation bracket to finish third in the 106 class with a 43-second pin over Louie Vazquez of Oroville.

Other team scores included Cle Elum 87, Liberty 82.5, Reardan 81.5, Lake Roosevelt 72, Pateros 70, Wilbur/Creston/Keller 68.5, Oroville 61, Davenport 50.5, Northwest Christian 44 and Freeman 41.5.

The Bulldogs will travel to the Liberty tournament Saturday and return to Colfax next Wednesday to host a league match.

Now starting his sixth year as head coach, Gransbery has a total of 14 wresters on the squad. The lineup includes Travis Knauff, a sophomore in the 145 bracket, and Joey Rogers, a junior in the 120 class.

Nick McAdams returns as a senior in the 220 class. McAdams booked a strong start in the takedown tournament at Lakeside last Thursday but missed the Daveport tourney because of testing.

Kevin Kennedy will be back to compete in the heavyweight class.

Nate Barney and Morgan Rogers are also expected to be in action at Liberty Saturday with the Bulldogs. Blake Bodey, a fresman, has joined the lineup and will probably compete in the 152 class.
