Coach Doering honors all seven senior V-netters

Honorees at the Tuesday Colfax volleyball banquet from the left include Morgan Lord, Katelyn Scholz, Kylie Gronning, Ashtyn Aune, Sidney Sheer, Scout Cai, Olivia Mellor, Carmen Gfeller, Abbie Miller and Piper Cai. The team won their third consecutive 2B state title in November.

Coach Sue Doering changed the sports banquet format Tuesday night when she awarded the coach's award for volleyball to all seven seniors on the team which rolled to a third straight 2B state title at the SunDome last month. Doering said the 31-4 record posted by the team this year was a surprise to her.

She said the team accomplished the feat despite having a lot of players in new positions at the start of the year, facing a tough travel schedule and injury setbacks.

The Bulldogs went undefeated in league play and prevailed at district, regional and state playoffs.

The seven seniors at the head table Tuesday included Scout Cai, Morgan Lord, Sidney Sheer, Ashtyn Aune, Kylie Gronning, Olivia Mellor and Kaitlyn Scholz.

Carmen Gfeller, a sophomore, received the team's Most Valuable Player award. Coach Doering noted the Bulldog offense this year was designed to put Gfeller on the front line and keep her hitting. Gfeller capped the season by hitting 32 kills in the five-game championship battle with LaConner at the Dome.

Doering pointed out the Bulldogs defeated the second, third and fourth-rated teams in the state's 2B division on the way to the title.

Most-improved honors went to two sophomores: Piper Cai and Abbie Miller, who cranked up their hitting game as the season advanced.

The inspirational award went to Mellor and Lord.

Senior scholarship trophies went to Scholz, Mellor and Lord.

Jayvee coach Shawna Kneale said the team posted a 9-6 match record for the season with the lone NE loss to Northwest Christian.

Jayvee awards went to Taylor Sacamoto Howell, Madi Cox, Rachel Brown, Chelsea Becker, Brooklyn Nickerson, Josie Riebold, Greta Geier, Goldie Ackesson, Dava Krouse and Lexie Smith.

C-squad coach Casey Zander present awards to Kia Miller, Billy Birch, McKenna Davis, Emily Gibbons, Hattie Hober, Becker, Isabelle Erickson and Cassidy Shindler.
