Grandmothers host young consumers

Helped by Grandmother Ann, a young boy tallies his purchases at the Grandmother's Shop during the Christmas Joy for Children event.

A small group of youngsters rests after purchasing their goods at the Thrifty Grandmother's Shop Monday.

Thrifty Grandmothers upped the Christmas spirit in Colfax Monday with their Christmas Joy for Children event.

The grandmothers hosted children aged 4-12 and provided them $5 coupons to purchase items for their families. Grandmother Viv Nafziger said the first hour saw a lot of business.

“We had 19 in the first hour,” she said. “It was hilarious in here.”

Nafziger said it was a fun event and that the kids were well-behaved.

“They were good kids,” she said.

She also said that the kids were all very thrifty, with one of them even pointing out that an item marked for $1 was too expensive.

“We marked it down for him,” she said.

The Christmas Joy for Children event started last year, said Smith.

“We just thought it would be a fun thing to do,” said Smith. “It is just something the grannies came up with.”

Smith said about 50 kids came in throughout the four hours they were open.

“We had just a little break around noon,” she said. “It was a pretty steady stream.”

Smith said it brings joy to the grandmothers to be able to do this for the children.

“The grandmothers enjoy it every bit as much as the kids do,” she said.
