Keith Gfeller of Colfax loses the handle at impact with Jonathon Meyer of Lakeside in the Saturday non-league battle at Colfax.
Colfax boys Tuesday night defeated SE guests Dayton 61-36 to wrap up the pre-Christmas part of the hoop season. The non-league win broke a string of four straight losses, including a 0-3 run in the early part of the NE league campaign. Keith Gfeller led the attack with 17 points and sophomore guard Jaydon Soncarty finished with nine.
The Dayton guests kept pace with Colfax in the first quarter, but the hosts stacked up a nine-point gain in each of the next two quarters.
Dayton junior guard Ben Kleck was top scorer for the visitors with 17 points.
Colfax hosted Dayton after bowing 42-49 to the Dragons at St. George's Friday night to drop to 0-3 in league play. The Bulldogs stuck with the Dragons in the first half, but the Dragons carved out a six-point lead in the third quarter and kept on pace for the win. Cade Peplinski scored all 12 of his points for the hosts in the second half.
Colfax booked an odd finish with a 10-10 run of toss shots in the last quarter while their buckets from the field missed.
Junior Jared Kneale booked a strong night in the paint in battle with Isaac Werkman, the Eagles 6-6 senior who had to go to the bench early with a foul load.
Coached by Ron Cox, Lakeside Saturday took off in the first quarter 19-6 on the Bulldogs' court and never really allowed the Bulldogs to get back in the game. The Eagles established a 20-point margin for most of the game on the way to their 66-41 win.
Cameron Gay, a 6-4 senior guard, led the Eagles with 19 points, including 11 in the first half. Gay showed sharp court presence and ripped off a string of turnovers which the Eagles converted to points on the other end of the court.
