Olivia Mellor goes up for a shot in the paint against McKensie Brittos of Lakeside in Saturday’s non-league game at Colfax.
After dropping two close losses over the weekend, the Colfax girls Tuesday night crunched the Dayton Bulldogs 43-24 on the home court to get back in a win mode before the Christmas break. The Colfax defense, which earned strong credits over the weekend, allowed Dayton just a single point in the first quarter, and Dayton's total after three quarters was 13.
Sophomore Piper Cai topped a long list of Colfax scorers with 12 points, all of them coming from the floor.
Colfax hosted Dayton after dropping a three-point loss, 38-41 Saturday in another non-league match with Lakeside at home. The Eagles out-scored Colfax by seven points in the last quarter for the comeback win.
"It was just one of those things. We were in a position to win that game, but it just didn't happen," coach Corey Baerlocher said.
He noted the Bulldogs' defense stacked up a lot of credit by holding the A division guests down until the final minutes of the game.
The Bulldogs shot just 25 percent from the field against the Eagles, not enough to sustain a win over the long run, Baerlocher said.
Colfax went into the weekend action without their top scorer, Carmen Gfeller, who is expected to be out a minimum of four weeks with a hand injury. Also Saturday, the Bulldogs took to the the court with Taylor Garcia, one of the team's top enforcers on defense, out of the lineup.
Colfax and the Eagles scrambled for a 23-22 Bulldog lead at halftime, and the Bulldogs cracked a 32-28 lead at the end of three quarters with Ashtyn Aune hitting one of her three-point shots. The Colfax lead actually grew to seven points, 38-31, with Sidney Sheer plunking a pair of toss shots with 3:44 left on the clock.
That, however, turned out to be the last points for the Bulldogs, and the Eagles kept hitting. Hallie Jensen, a 6-0 sophomore, hit two inside buckets, one off a rebound, and the Eagles picked up two toss shots on the way to the 41-38 win.
Friday at St. George's the Bulldogs and the Dragons also went down to the final seconds in a battle.
The Dragons, who hit a string of toss shots in the final minutes, finished with a 44-38 win to stetch their league mark to 3-0. The loss was the first NE defeat for Colfax.
Coach Baerlocher again noted the Bulldogs waged some strong defense.
Dragon ace Hailey Higashi, who finished with a game-high 16 points, actually had just three buckets from the floor.
Cai hit 11 to lead the Bulldogs, and Garcia scored eight Friday.
Colfax senior Scout Cai, who was able to return the hoop scene after recovering from a volleyball back injury, finished with four points against the Dragons in her season start.
St. George's went on Saturday to post a 44-36 win over Liberty to advance their record to 4-0 in the league race.
