Colfax girls derailed a strong Davenport team 54-48 Tuesday night with a big fourth-quarter comeback. The Bulldogs stopped a young Davenport team, which rolled up a 9-1 record on the season and posted a 6-0 mark in the first round of the NE league.
Colfax used a high energy defense and a stronger bench to stop the Gorillas who started the game with just eight players on the roster.
The game featured a 15-point swing in the third and fourth quarters with Davenport erasing a seven-point Colfax lead and rolling to a 45-37 lead with freshman Meika Heath leading the pack with a game-high 23 points.
Colfax then started the last comeback of the game with five quick points. Sophomore Greta Geier hit a three pointer from the corner, and sophomore Piper Cai rolled in for a layup.
Ashtyn Aune, who finished with 19 points for the Bulldogs, cracked the last lead with a threebie with 1:48 left on the clock.
The game stayed close down to the final seconds, with the Gorillas twice missing foul shots that could have tied up the score.
The last minutes of the game also saw a return of Carmen Gfeller to the court after Colfax lost three players on fouls late in the action.
Davenport lost three players to fouls and finished the end of the game without any reserves on the bench.
Saturday against Tekoa-Rosalia, Colfax cooked a 35-21 lead over the visitors in the first half and weathered a charge in the third quarter. Led by Tommia Pakootas, TR booked a nine-point sprint in the last three minutes of the third quarter. Pakootas hit three straight threebies, and Hannah Beach, who topped the visitors with 16 points, put up a hook shot and a subsequent foul shot to finish out the third frame just three points back of the hosts, 39-42.
Colfax turned it around in the fourth quarter with a 22-point finish for the frame.
Ella Gregory hit a three-pointer for TR, and the T-wolves also ran a string of foul shots but they couldn’t keep pace.
The Bulldogs finished with 16 of 30 toss shots for the game which saw the two NE neighbor teams roll up 45 fouls.
