Serving Whitman County since 1877
The Moscow Macy’s, anchor tenant at the Palouse Empire Mall, was included on the list of 36 pending Macy’s store closures issued by the company in a press release Jan. 6. The downtown Spokane Macy’s was also included on the list.
The Moscow store has been at the mall since it was opened in 1979 and has a roster of 47 employees.
The downtown Spokane Macy’s was formerly the Bon Marché building. The Macy’s news release listed the size of the Moscow Macy’s at 41,000 square feet and the size of the downtown Spokane store at 374,000 square feet, which was the largest store on the closure list.
The report said clearance sales in the listed stores began Monday and will continue over the next eight to 12 weeks. Two of the stores on the list have already been conducting clearance sales.
The Spokane store was the only store listed in Washington, and the Moscow Macy’s was the only one listed in Idaho. Oregon stores in Roseburg and North Bend were also listed.
The Macy’s report said the stores slated to close are among “about” 770 operated by Macy’s. The Jan. 6 release also noted four other stores were closed last year.
