Colfax boys stack two more Northeast wins

Colfax boys added two solid wins over the weekend to move their NE record to 5-4 as the league action went past the middle point. The Bulldogs Friday posted a solid 58-44 win over the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats at Creston and returned home Saturday for a 62-42 win over Kettle Falls with a strong run in the second half.

On the first lap of NE South action in December, the Bulldogs sustained a 0-3 run in league play, which was followed by a six-game win streak that ended two weeks ago when they played Northwest Christian. Colfax seeks to balance out the rough start when they begin the last round on the south side.

Toughest round was set Wednesday night, too late for deadline, when they headed for Liberty to play the 14-0 Lancers. Colfax is scheduled to play at Reardan Friday and then host the LRS Broncos next Tuesday.

Just two more league games, one at Rosalia Jan. 30 against the Nighthawks and a home closer Feb. 2 against St. George's, will close out the league run and trigger the start of the playoff season.

Friday at Creston, Colfax senior Keith Gfeller lit up the gym with seven three-point shots in the first half against the Wildcats. Gfeller, who hit six treys in a game earlier in the year, is believed to have set a record with the seven zappers over two quarters. They hit the last one Friday just before the halftime buzzer and finished with 25 points for the night.

Colfax led by 20 points, 42-21 at the half.

Dorian Jaeger, last seen here calling the plays for the Wildcats football team, topped Wilbur Creston with 14 points.

Saturday on the home court, Colfax went up against a young and scrappy Kettle Falls team. Colfax led by just three points, 27 -24 at the break, but they came out in the second half and added 12 more points to the gap in the third quarter. Junior Danny Robinson led Colfax with 20 points.

Kenton Lyman pulled down 10 rebounds for Colfax.

One feature of the game was the sparse number of foul. Each team was called for just nine. Robinson was the lone Colfax player to wind up at the toss line, and he hit seven of eight shots. The K-dogs had just three shots off the line, and Daniel Truque, sophomore guard, collected on all three. Truque topped coach Jim Walker's Kettle team with 11 points.

Kettle now stands at 3-7 in the NE race.
