Donald C. Collier
A graveside service for Donald C. Collier, 88, has been scheduled for Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. in the Steptoe cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at the Colfax Golf Course club building.
Mr. Collier died Jan. 28, 2016, at his home in Walla Walla where he had lived for the last 16 years.
Born Oct. 6, 1927, at Paha, Wash., to Maude and Benjamin Collier, he was a member of large family which moved to a farm in the Steptoe Butte area when he was four years old.
He attended the Steptoe school and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war.
While he served in the Navy, he learned to be a cook and that evolved into a long career of operating restaurants in the area. He was in the restaurant business in Seattle, Oakland and Portland. At one time he returned to his home area and operated the Korner Koffee Kup in Colfax in 1977 and 1978. His last restaurant was in Lewiston.
Mr. Collier is survived by six children, three brothers and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Melita Lenora Johnson
A celebration of the life of Melita Lenora Johnson, 92, Potlatch, will be Sunday, Feb. 21, at 12:30 p.m. at the Elmore United Methodist Church, 6147 Hwy 95, Potlatch. A fellowship potluck will follow. Her remains will be buried next to her husband at Pines Cemetery, Spokane.
Mrs. Johnson died Dec. 28, 2015. She had been recuperating from a stroke during the previous four months at Aspen Care and Rehab Center, Moscow.
Born Aug. 18, 1923, in Colville, to Lynn and Fern Mumau, she moved with her family to Tensed, Idaho, and graduated from high school at Plummer.
After graduating from high school, she met and, in 1942, married Ike Johnson, a logger and a widower with three young children, Dwaine, Vernon and Lorraine. Three children were born to Melita and Ike who raised their children near Tensed. Later they moved to Potlatch. When their sons were no longer around to help Ike in the woods, Melita worked with her husband. She later worked as a caregiver in the homes of the elderly.
She enjoyed gardening, watching birds, picking huckleberries and playing cards. She also played the piano and autoharp and was an avid reader.
Mr. Johnson died in 1978. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine, and two grandchildren.
Survivors include her children Dwaine (Barbara) of Deary, Idaho; Vernon of Potlatch, Lynn (Audrey) of Potlatch, Lynda of Colbert, Karen of Potlatch; two half-brothers Daren and Arlynn Mumau; 10 grandchildren, and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
