Three Bulldogs win regional, six to Tacoma

Colfax wrestlers followed a team traditon with the bleached-blonde look in the week before departing for the state mat classic at the Tacoma Dome. In front, from the left, are Reggie Jones, Chris Jones, Garrett Phillips and Nick McAdams. In back with coach Dennis Gransbery are Mitch Barney, left, and Brian DeYoung.

Six Colfax wrestlers qualified for the state mat classic this weekend at the Tacoma Dome with top-four finishes at the regional meet Saturday at Reardan. The regional round for all B schools matched the top four finishers from the sub-regionals last week at Liberty and Springdale.

"We really had a great last round with all our finalists getting wins," coach Dennis Granberry commented.

Three Bulldogs won their weight classes, and three others battled through consolation rounds to finish third and win an entry into the state finals.

Chris Jones at 132 pounds, Reggie Jones at 145 and Mitch Barney at 152 placed first Saturday at Reardan.

All three of the title wins were on pins, and the two Jones brothers won all of their matches on pins.

Garrett Phillips at 106, Brian DeYoung at 195 and Nick McAdams at 220 placed third out of the consolation bracket.

Colfax placed third in the team scoring with 119 points, behind the 160.5 team win posted by Reardan. Selkirk, team winner last week in north end action at Springdale, placed second with 139 points. Sixteen teams competed at Reardan.

Garfield/Palouse, which was scored separately from Colfax, finished with five points on the fifth-place finish by Joey Rogers in the 120-pound class. Travis Knauff, Viking sophomore who had a strong run this year in the 138-pound class, was knocked out for the season last week with a broken collar bone.

"It's really a shame. He was ranked at third in the state, and could have had a strong finish," coach Gransberry noted.

The Colfax finalists plan to depart Thursday after getting a sendoff at school. Practice sessions will be allowed in the dome Thursday before the start of competition Friday.
