Vikings, Patriots to play for title

Vikings senior Mitch Dymkoski takes the ball to the hoop against Pomeroy Saturday in a second round game.

Like a lackluster offering from Anheuser-Busch showing up at the Palouse Cabin Fever Brewfest, the Pomeroy Pirates came to town last Saturday and got dismissed, 69-44.

After a first round bye, Garfield/Palouse took the victory, led by Ian Niebergs with 26 points and Mitch Dymkoski's 15, putting the Vikings in the district championship game for the third consecutive year.

Last year at Clarkston, they beat Pomeroy for the Southeast 1B title, after losing to the Pirates the year before in the championship game.

On Friday, for the 2015-16 title, Gar/Pal plays Liberty Christian, a team they split two games with during the season.

The winner will advance to the state sub tournament, while the loser drops into the second-place game Saturday afternoon, to play the winner of Touchet and Pomeroy.

Garfield/Palouse is the lone Whitman County boys team left playing after Colton went down at the hands of Touchet Monday in Walla Walla. The Wildcats opened the district tournament with a win over Oakesdale, followed by a trip to Richland where they lost to Liberty Christian.

Oakesdale was eliminated by Pomeroy Monday in Walla Walla.

Touchet 61,

Colton 35

They had beat them twice in the regular season.

One of Touchet's main players, Lot Butler, did not travel to the game. But Colton trailed by 20 points in the first half and never recovered, losing Monday night to end their season in the third round of the district playoffs.

“It was definitely a big surprise,” said Wildcats coach Jason Shull. “In our last couple of games, we went as cold as you can get.”

Colton opened the district bracket at home last Thursday, beating Oakesdale. On the road next at Liberty Christian, they lost by 18 points.

The Wildcats shot three of 27 from the three-point line, in a game which only four players scored, two of them with just two points.

“It's hard to know what to put my finger on,” Shull said.

At Walla Walla Monday, in the loser's bracket, Colton met Touchet.

“They were able to get us in a lot of different ways,” said Shull.

Grant Kinzer scored 14 points to lead the team in the season-ending loss.

Pomeroy 69, Oakesdale 47

Jake Tewalt led the Pirates with 18 points while Cort LaMunyan and Oscar Morfin added 13 and 11, as Pomeroy ended Oakesdale's season. The Pirates advance to play Touchet Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Walla Walla.
