DIONE BRANDT
A memorial service for Dione Brandt, 79, will be Monday, March 7, 2016, at 12 p.m. at the Common Room at the Tekoa Retirement Apartments. Urn burial will be at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa.
She died Feb. 22, 2016, at Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley.
Born Sept. 25, 1936, in Phoenix, Ariz., to William S. and Margaret Louise Corey, she attended schools in Flagstaff, Ariz., where she graduated from high school. Dione then attended St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Phoenix and became a registered nurse.
She and Peter Brandt were married in Waterville, Wash., Nov. 13, 1971, and they made their home in Waterville until 1975 when they moved to the Spokane area for a few years before settling in Tekoa in 1981. She worked as a nurse at the Tekoa Care Center for 11 years before retiring for health reasons in 1993. Her husband died in 1991.
She lived in Everett, Oregon and Spokane before returning to Tekoa in 2015. She has made her home at Fairfield Care for the past six months.
Her hobbies included painting with oils and pastels and writing.
Survivors include, two sons, Joseph (Jean) Brandt of Tekoa, and Jason (Amy) Brandt of Colorado; daughters Marina Sczenski of Tekoa, Alexandra Martin of Bend, Ore., and Beth Innocence of Everett; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and one brother, Tom (Julia) Corey of Pinetop, Ariz. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristine Brandt, in 2014.
NORMA R. OWENS
A memorial/celebration for the life of Norma R. Owens, 94, will be Sunday, March 6, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Latah Community Center in Latah.
She died Jan. 5, 2016, at Pullman Regional Hospital in Pullman.
Born March 2, 1921, in Fremont, Ohio, to Fred and Hilda (Lipstraw) Strohl, she attended schools in Fremont and graduated from Ross High School in 1939. In 1943, she enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Army Air Corps for three years. She was discharged in April of 1946 as a captain in the WAC.
After traveling across country with a close friend from the WAC and becoming a legal secretary, she eventually settled in Denver, Colo., where she met her first husband, Richard Swartz. They had two children, Linda and David Swartz. Richard worked as a civil servant for the Dept. of the Army and was transferred to various locations across the country, ending up in California.
Norma received her A.A. degree from Diablo Valley College in Concord Calif., in the late 1970s. She moved to Washington in 1980 and married Roger Owens in Garfield in 1983. They made their home in Latah, and she continued living there after Roger died in 1993.
Norma’s hobbies included various sports, traveling, walking, painting, drawing and photography.
Survived are a her son, David Swartz, Los Osos, Calif. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda.
