Jesus hanging on the cross in fulfillment of Scripture spoke these words, (John 19:28) “I am thirsty.” Physical thirst is one of the strongest, most powerful desires that we possess. Keeping enough liquids in our body so that we do not become dehydrated is a life issue. Physical thirst is a desire for replenishment.
Spiritual thirst is a craving for relationship with God, a desire to know God intimately. This thirst leads naturally into a longing to worship God. The Psalmist wrote (42:1, 2) “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” His thirst is for the Creator God who gives and sustains life.
Augustine, one of the Latin church fathers, wrote "Thou has created us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee." Jesus, in what is referred to as the sermon on the mount, (Matthew 5:6) said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” A thirst to be in the right relationship with God.
Thirst calls for action. A desire to quench the need. Be attentive and responsible to this basic need to seek God for He has designed us for this purpose.
