ESTHER L. BARTLETT
A memorial service for Esther L. Bartlett, 82, resident of Potlatch for 55 years, will be Saturday, March 12, 2016, 1 p.m. in the Church of the Nazarene at Princeton, Idaho, with Pastor Bob Lambert officiating. Mrs. Bartlett died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at her Potlatch home.
Born July 12, 1933, in Kellogg, Idaho, to Carl and Mary Wilson Thompson, she went to school in Kingston, Idaho, and later graduated from Potlatch High School.
She married Paul Bartlett March 1, 1951, in Kellogg, and the couple made their home at Pinehurst and later in Ponderay, Idaho. In 1960, the couple moved to Potlatch where they have made their home since. Mr. Bartlett worked in the woods as a tree feller. Mrs. Bartlett was a homemaker all her life.
She enjoyed camping, fishing and cross stitching. She collected cookbooks and cooked for the Potlatch senior citizens for several years. She was an avid bowler for many years.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 65 years, Paul Bartlett, at the Potlatch home, one son, John Bartlett, Lewiston; one daughter, Vicki Scott (James), Princeton; one brother, George Thompson, Smelterville, Idaho; two grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
Memorial donations may be given to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund, Box 63, Potlatch, Idaho, 83855, or to the Cancer Fund.
JACK ORIN ELKINS
A memorial service with full military honors for Jack Orin Elkins, 93, a graduate of Oakesdale High School and one of the last surviving World War II prisoners of war, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., in Kent. Mr. Elkins died Feb. 17, 2016. He was a long-time resident of Everett where he operated an equipment leasing company for many years.
Born in Garfield Oct. 3, 1922, to William M. and Grace Dicus Elkins, he was raised in Oakesdale where his father operated a blacksmith shop and his mother was a teacher. After he graduated at Oakesdale, he joined the U.S. Marines at the age of 19. He was among Marines who were captured on Corregidor in the Philippines at the start of the war and taken by ship to a prison work camp in Yokohama, Japan. He was among survivors who were liberated after the war.
He returned back home, attended Gonzaga University and later became an auto and truck salesmen. He later moved to Everett where he sold cars and then started his own equipment leasing business. He was an avid handball player and competed past his 80th birthday at the Everett Elks Club.
Mr. Elkins was honored with a special recognition day in Everett when he received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and other service medals for his World War II service.
He and his wife, Gladys, were married in Spokane in 1951. She, two sons, Lonny and Mike, and two brothers, Frank and Bill, preceded him in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann; six grandsons; three great-grandsons, and two sisters, Marian and Betty.
ELDON W. SHAW
The funeral service for Eldon W. Shaw, 92, was Wednesday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the community center in Tensed, Idaho. A graveside service followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries, Idaho. Mr. Shaw, a lifelong area resident, died March 2, 2016, at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.
Born April 22, 1923, near Tensed to Roy A. and Mary (Albin) Shaw, he attended first grade at the Tensed School, then attended the Fairview Country School and then two years at Plummer High School. He farmed with his father south of DeSmet for the next few years.
He and Mary Ann Hughes were married Nov. 9, 1947, in Plummer, and the couple made their home south of DeSmet where he farmed. In 1959, he went to work at Potlatch Forests, Inc. in Potlatch, Idaho. He worked for the mill for 26 years as a trimmer operator and sealer until the mill closed in 1981. Eldon then worked as a security officer at the mill until it was torn down. He then retired, and the family continued to live on their farm near DeSmet.
Eldon attended the Elmore United Methodist Church and was a member of the Woodworkers of America and the National Rifle Association. He was a former member of the Tensed Grange and Odd Fellows Lodge in Tekoa. While growing up, Eldon played in the school band, and later traveled and sang with the Dave Garrick band of DeSmet.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Shaw at the family home; three daughters, Eldonna (Larry) Davis of Spokane Valley, Cathy (Bob) Horlacher of DeSmet, Teresa (Jacey) Nygaard of DeSmet; nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Shaw, and his grandson, Ethan Horlacher.
