Serving Whitman County since 1877
Registration for artists and businesses opened for the annual Pullman Art Walk which will mark its seventh year May 12-14. Artist registration is open to anyone in Whitman County or Latah County or with ties to greater Palouse, said Joanna Bailey, director of the Neill Public Library which helps to plan the event with the Pullman Arts Council.
Businesses host the artists during the three-day event, so business participants must come from Pullman, Bailey said.
“The Saturday event is limited to downtown merchants, but the Thursday and Friday events are open to businesses out of the downtown core, but still in Pullman,” she said.
Businesses can host multiple artists. Last year, 73 artists were hosted by 23 businesses.
“It was quite a project. We doubled community participation last year, and we're hoping it will be bigger this year and hoping to improve and broaden the scope,” Bailey said.
New to the Art Walk this year will be two days added to the event. The Art Walk has traditionally been on a Saturday, but the event is booked for the prior Thursday and Friday of this year.
“That came from direct feedback they got last year,” Bailey said. “They took that feedback to heart.”
Thursday and Friday will offer a different format. She said that artists and businesses can host interactive activities, set up displays or find other ways to get people involved during these two days.
“We're hoping to really broaden the scope so it includes things like theatre or music, not just what you'd think of as traditional art,” Bailey said.
Saturday will be a little more chaotic, she said.
“The Saturday is really the festival part of this with lots of participation and an intense burst of activity from 4 to 8 p.m.,” Bailey said. “The Thursday and Friday is really up to the artist and their business.”
Registration is open online.
“It's a great opportunity for artists and community members to come out and celebrate art,” she said. “It has really grown and become a primary opportunity for artists and businesses to celebrate art in Pullman.”
