Colfax High School jazz band returned from Gresham, Ore., Sunday after winning the second-place trophy in the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival. Colfax placed second in its division to Milwaukie, Ore., a school of about 1,400 students in the Portland area.
Colfax band director Mike Morgan said the Mt. Hood festival places schools from a wide range of sizes in each of its competition divisions. The second-place win at Mt. Hood follows the Colfax band's first place win three weeks ago at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.
Senior guitar player Ryan Reynolds won an outstanding soloist award to finish out his career with the jazz band.
The band played their competition set which includes "Sonny's Place," "Here's That Rainy Day," and "Wind Machine." A total of 43 students made the trip to Gresham and 22 performed in the band competition.
Seven band seniors will be honored Thursday during the jazz band concert which will start at 7 p.m. in the CHS auditorium. They include Reynolds, Tim Cornelius, Adam Tate, Cody Fulfs, Galen McWhirter, Chris Koenig and Austin Ledbetter.
The hour-long concert will feature the competition set and other long numbers.
