County hires Mulholland to help cut statement lag

Hiring of William Mulholland, retired City of Pullman finance director, was approved by Whitman County Commissioners Monday to help design a system for timely reconciliation of statements for the county's accounts. Mulholland will work with County Treasurer Mark Clinton and the treasurer's office to upgrade the system.

County Commissioner Dean Kinzer said the key problem they hope to resolve is a lag in the county's financial system which leaves the county unable to get up-to-date information on the standing of its accounts. The lag means the commissioners and other administrators are handicapped when a decision involves a check on the current status of the funding in a particular account.

Kinzer Tuesday said the lag on some county accounts can be as long as a year.

After his retirement at Pullman, Mulholland last year worked part-time for the City of Colfax when the city's financial director seat was vacant.

He was hired for the county assignment at a rate of $75 per hour and authorized to work on the project for up to 200 hours.
