Garfield May Day debuts SE band

A new marching band will highlight the parade Saturday for Garfield’s May Day celebration. Made up of a combination of Garfield/Palouse, Oakesdale, LaCrosse and Washtucna students, the Southeast Washington Marching Band will debut in the parade which will start at 11 a.m.

Conducted by Matt Zook, Gar/Pal music director, the SE band will perform Saturday evening in the Spokane Lilac Parade.

Started originally by the American Legion for Armed Forces Day, Garfield’s celebration is now sponsored by the Garfield Community Association.

Festivities will start Saturday at 6 a.m. with the Boy Scouts’ breakfast which will be served at the Garfield Middle School. Serving will continue until 10 a.m.

At 8 a.m., the starting gun will fire for the “Space Race” 5K run. Check-in for the race will begin at 7:15 a.m.

The kiddie parade will start at 10:45 a.m. with prizes for best costume.

The main parade at 11 a.m. will follow presentation of the flag by the Boy Scouts and after the national anthem is sung.

At noon, Victoria Welch will be crowned as Garfield queen. That will be followed by the Potlatch Junior Jammers performing on stage in the park gazebo.

“They always come every year. We’re pretty blessed by that,” said Connie Kriebel, a volunteer with the Garfield Community Association.

Also at the park, 22 different vendors will sell various crafts and other items.

Lunch options will include Palouse Lions Club hamburgers and Cowboy dogs.

A bouncy castle and 4-in-1 game will also be on hand at the park while the Viking Crew will stage an egg toss.

Garfield Community Association members will sell raffle tickets for the prize of one half of a hog, already cut and wrapped.

An FFA plant sale will also take place in the park and the Garfield/Palouse FFA trap shooters will sell popcorn and snowcones.

“We just want everyone to come out and have a fun day,” said Kriebel.
