Wildcats dismiss Curlew, advance

Kendyl Druffel throws out a runner against Curlew. At top, pitcher Emma Schultheis throws in a 10-0 shutout.

At left, junior second baseman

The Colton infield converges; MaryAnn Jacobs, Emma Schultheis, Jordan Moehrle, Kendyl Druffel and Rachel Meyer.

It was a test of discipline.

Don’t swing at high and/or wide pitches and you may draw enough walks to score 10 runs off two hits.

Colton did just that last Saturday at Medical Lake in the Southeast 1B District 7/9 tournament against Curlew.

Opening districts as a No. 1-seed, the Wildcats met No. 4 Curlew and strove for a “good eye.”

Taking in 13 walks, Colton added a three-RBI triple from Jordan Moerhle and a two-RBI single from Rachel Meyer to end the game in five innings.

“It’s a tough game when all you do is walk,” said coach Brad Nilson. “But we played pretty decent, I thought.”

Emma Schultheis pitched all five innings, allowing two Curlew hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

With the win, Colton advanced to the second weekend of districts, with six teams remaining for four spots at state. The Wildcats meet league foe Touchet at 11 a.m. Saturday back at Medical Lake.

The winner advances to a 4 p.m. game to decide the No. 1 and No. 2 district seeds for the state tournament in Yakima.

If Colton loses, they play a 1 p.m. elimination game to vie for a No. 3 or No. 4 seed to state.
