Each day of our lives we are confronted with choices we must make. One of these decisions is when we go to our closets and ask ourselves this question: “What Should I Wear Today?” In 1975, John Molloy wrote a book called “Dress For Success,” which became the fashion guidebook for many people trying to climb the corporate ladder. His advice centered on a basic premise, which was to dress like your boss.
However, there is a more important wardrobe we must consider each day to wear which is the right attitudes and actions. Our spiritual apparel is of far greater significance than our physical clothing.
Christianity is more than a list of do’s and don’ts. It is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, just like any relationship there are things that we ought to do and things that we are not to do. The Bible speaks about sinful things that we are to “put off” in our lives and to replace those things by “putting on” the right things. There are things that need to be “put off” from our lives and their counterparts that should be “put on” in their place. The Bible says to put off some things:
“5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth” (Colossians 3:5-8).
Scripture also says to put on somethings:
“12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long suffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness” (Colossians 3:12-14).
You must always take off the old dirty clothes before putting on the new clean clothes. We are to put on new spiritual garments. In place of anger, wrath, malice, slander, a dirty mouth and lies, we are to put on mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness and love.
God’s purpose is that we should always be growing and becoming more and more like our boss, the Lord Jesus Christ. The ultimate goal for a Christian is to be conformed to the image of Christ. We are to wear the same kind of spiritual garments fit for the Savior. If we are going to be successful at living the Christian life, we must put on Christ-likeness.
Just like pilots, soldiers, athletes, etc. must dress the part, so Christians are to do the same. When you wake up tomorrow morning, make sure that you not only pick out the right physical garment for the day but the right spiritual one, too.
